Alice Kinari is a fifth-grade student leading an ordinary but pleasant life with her loving parents. While Alice's parents had an unconventional beginning, they now have a picture-perfect romance that Alice admires immensely. She also has many friends at school and even a budding crush on her classmate Riichi Akanazaka. Nothing seems to be amiss until one day, Alice's father leaves for a business trip in Kansai and never returns. Instead of Alice's father, loan sharks appear, searching for her father and demanding payment for the debt he had acquired. Confused and afraid, Alice's mother forces them to escape from the sharks. As her mother files for divorce and transitions into working multiple jobs to keep the two of them afloat, Alice transfers to a new school and starts her life over as Alice Azamino. Being unable to say goodbye to her old friends and getting ostracized by her new classmates makes Alice feel lonelier than ever.
